Our October 2016 meeting

‘Fisher lassies’ by Simon Fairlie

At our October meeting we had a fascinating insight into the lives of the fisher folk of Fisherrow and in particular of the work of the women who gutted the fish. Simon’s tales of the conditions of the girls who were gutting fish with a very sharp knife while their hands were freezing and in the open air in often freezing weather was very descriptive and the video shown at the end of the talk showed just how quickly these girls had to work to complete their quota for the day.

Our speaker, Simon Fairlie, showed photographs and, together with his reminiscences of the times he had spent with his father and family on their fishing boats as a young lad all added, as always, to the interesting evening with Simon.
