Our 15 September 2015 meeting

‘Looking up Edinburgh’

The subject of this talk, by Adrian Searle, was looking up Edinburgh and about how we tend not to look at what is above us when walking around the city. However we actually began with ‘Looking up Glasgow’ and comparing how flamboyant Glasgow architectural decoration was compared to the more refined Edinburgh style although there are some wonderful example in Edinburgh also. The ones which most spring to mind are the Scott Monument and Jenners store but there are so many others, many in unusual places.

Unfortunately there were no Leith buildings included although there are several, with my particular favourite being the frieze on the old Corn Exchange Building at the corner of Tower Street which depicts various stages in agriculture. Perhaps Adrian will correct this in his next book so that we can see some of the excellent buildings around Leith.
