The first major development on Great Junction Street was the building of a church for the denomination then known as the Relief Church. In 1847 it became part of the United Presbyterian Church, in 1900 part of the United Free Church and in 1929 part of the Church of Scotland.
The church as shown on the Ordnance Survey large scale town plan ‘Edinburgh and its Environs’ for 1852
Extracted from Ordnance Survey large scale town plan sheet 16 published 1852. Original scale 1:500. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland.
The church was completed in 1825, and it is hard to appreciate now that, when it was built, it was located among the fields on the outskirts of Leith.
